One of the most important technology decisions a growing business makes is whether to build an internal IT team or outsource IT to a managed services provider. Both approaches work — but for different business profiles. Here's how to think through the decision.

The Case for Managed IT

Managed IT services provide a team of specialists for a predictable monthly fee. You get a helpdesk, monitoring, security, cloud management, and strategic advisory without hiring, managing, or retaining technical staff.

The financial case is straightforward for most businesses under 100 employees. A mid-level IT hire costs $65,000–$90,000 per year in salary alone, before benefits, training, and the inevitable gaps in expertise. A managed services team covers more ground for less.

The operational case is equally compelling: 24/7 monitoring, faster response times than a single internal hire can provide, and continuity of service when your IT person leaves.

The Case for In-House IT

Internal IT makes the most sense for larger organizations with complex, specialized infrastructure that requires dedicated, embedded expertise. Businesses with proprietary systems, heavily regulated environments, or technology as a core product often benefit from building in-house capability.

The tradeoff is cost and coverage. One IT hire covers one range of skills. Multiple hires cover more ground but at significantly higher cost. Turnover creates dangerous coverage gaps.

The Hybrid Approach

Many growing businesses land on a hybrid model: an internal IT director or CTO who owns strategy and vendor relationships, supported by a managed services provider for day-to-day operations and helpdesk. This captures the strategic value of internal ownership without the operational overhead.

How to Decide

Ask three questions: How many employees depend on IT daily? How specialized is your infrastructure? And what is your appetite for managing an internal technology team? Businesses under 150 employees with standard infrastructure almost always get better outcomes from managed IT.
